Description
How can I honor the heritage of Stickley furniture while creating a contemporary and functional aesthetic?
Gustav Stickley took the skills learned from his immigrant family, the materials characteristic of the area and the ideals of a growing Arts and Crafts movement to create furniture that was honest, classic and uniquely American.
This chair was inspired by original Stickley designs, contemporary European furniture, and local materials. I wanted to reconnect the Stickley brand with their heritage while celebrating that which makes them important in the here and now.
The solid Ash frame is held together with classic joinery techniques that reference Stickley’s heritage and reputation. The geometric elements of the octagonal legs reinforce the purpose of the X shaped rails. These support a molded leather seat that was formed over a tradional carved wooden chair seat.
